Rain happens, what about my roof?

The rainy season is right around the corner. This means that damage to your roof is not so far along. How do you know when it’s time to call your roofer? Winds and harsh rain can take a toll on your roof. As a home and property owner, it’s important to inspect your property after it rains. You can be ready with your analysis when you finally call your roofer.

Here are some suggestions as to what you should be looking for.

Inside: Start your way in the attic.

  • If you can see the sunlight in the attic, that’s a sure sign that you will need some major repairs to your roof.
  • After thoroughly inspecting the attic and have seen no signs of holes, then you can flash some light on the decking. You will be looking for any signs of dark stains or streaks, or any sagging. All of these can be caused by moisture.

Outside: Are you able to see all of your roof from the ground level? Take a walk around your property and find out if you have any of the following:

  • Missing parts of your roof – replace them as soon as possible.
  • Cracks on your roof – can be caused by high winds or flying debris, can be patched by a professional roofer.
  • Dark patches on your roof – It doesn’t look good now does it? These bare patches leave your roof vulnerable to the sun and can cause leaks in the future.
  • Flashing is bent. This is what’s keeping your roof safe from water exposure. If this is bent, then the water is not properly exiting your roof. Call a roofing expert to seal this properly.
  • Debris. Be very careful with debris on your roof. You never know if it caused any damage until you look at it.

Up the ladder: Climb the ladder very carefully and at your own risk. While up on your roof, look for the following:

  • Nails on the floor of your roof can signify that your roof is about to collapse with the next storm.
  • Gutter debris – Cleaning your gutter consistently is important to keep your roof clean and well maintained.

What did you find? Always call a professional and reputable roofing contractor. There are many unscrupulous roofers that go around neighborhoods after a storm with a piece of shingle in their hands stating that it fell from YOUR roof. Only a reputable roofer will come out and properly inspect your roof for FREE to let you know the condition of your roof and what steps you need to take.

Take care of your roof and call a professional as soon as possible. The faster you take care of the issue, the least expensive it will be and the faster you and your family will be protected.
